valerie bentson | portraits

Valerie Bentson, sometimes going by Valerie Joyce, is a singer-songwriter and actress from California living and working in Bangkok. I had the pleasure of acting alongside her during my first theater experience a few months ago. She's talented and such a joy to be around. Totally quirky and absolutely chill.

We spent the day walking up and down the canals of Bangkok. It's a grimy place with lots of graffiti, tainted waterways and overgrown foliage. I adore them.

brandy and derrick | engagement

what i love about this couple the most is their friendship. it's not all heart eyes and kissy faces (though there was plenty of that to go around). their love is genuine and it's real and it's built on a solid foundation of truly enjoying the other person's company. i think that's something all of us can strive for in our relationships to come.

brandy and derrick were in thailand from austin, tx. for just a short week to visit derrick's family. derrick's sister gifted this photo shoot to them for their engagement. i'm happy to have been a part of their little time in thailand before they are wed.

upon meeting the couple at a coffee shop, brandy and derrick told me they were both pretty nervous to be in front of the camera. after we got done shooting, brandy sent me a wonderful message saying how it wasn't how she expected it to be at all. how they both really enjoyed themselves and didn't find it to be awkward or uncomfortable as they had imagined an engagement shoot to be.

we had a relaxing afternoon in bangkok, the three of us. and i did my darnedest to capture their natural selves on camera so they can remember these days as they were.

Odin's First Home | Bangkok, Thailand

Stacks of books and colorful building blocks. An abstract painting of a zebra and a particular liking of the number 4 on the big clock. Stones to throw in the pool and a tuk-tuk to ride just for fun. These are just a few of the things I took away from my hours with this sweet, young family at their home in Bangkok.

Hala, the mama, contacted me about her interest in documenting the first home of her first child. The family is moving to another neighborhood and wanted their memories captured beforehand.

I adore shoots like these with the specific goal in mind of documenting feels. It's with great hope that I locked down the atmosphere this group of three was able to share in their first home as a family.

UNSEEN THAILAND: phitsanulok

I put off writing this post for several days, maybe a couple weeks. I can't even explain why. The draft page has been open on my computer for awhile. I keep staring at it and nothing comes out. Is this writer's block? Can I call myself a writer even?

It really has been awhile since I wrote as the last post in here is from February and the text reads as follows:

"I'm gonna let the pictures do the talking on this one."

Oh, McKinsey, you are ridiculously lame and obviously too lazy to actually write anything.

NOT THIS TIME, MATE.

Now on to the actual content for this post. UNSEEN THAILAND: Phitsanulok. I keep using this phrase 'unseen Thailand' as it was a recurring theme in the TV show we were filming, Sofar So Good. This show is filmed in various locations around Thailand and each episode brings along a different tourist or foreigner to experience these new locations, new places, things off the beaten path. The purpose behind Sofar So Good is to showcase tourism in the country. So, yeah, I got a whole 45 minutes of fame in the episode the folks at Sofar So Good wanted to film with me.

Though I'll admit being filmed for television is kind of nervewracking. After each scene I filmed, all I could think was Shit did I sound like an idiot? Did I say "That's amazing!" too many times? Do my super cool overalls actually look really dorky? Or maybe that's me being the paranoid, anxiety-ridden human being I am. Probably.
